The 12th of February the training seminar “Open Science and European Open Access policies in H2020” took place at UJI. The seminar was organised by UJI in conjunction with the project FOSTER (Remedios Melero) and with the collaboration of OpenAire project (Pedro Príncipe). It consisted in two main sessions. The first one was an introduction to what Open Science & Open access is and the role of OpenAire. The second part of the seminar was mostly based on creating a Research Data Management plan.
Reme Melero (@reme_melero) started giving an overview about the EU Directives about Open Access. When it comes to Open Access in H2020, European researchers are compelled to publish publications in Open Access platforms, either by the Green Route (Open Access Repositories) or Gold Route (Open Access Journals). Open access to research data is still limited to some areas. H2020 has the OPen Research Data Pilot that should specifically address the issue. Despite the rest of H2020 calls are not obliged to accomplish with open access in terms of research data, it is always beneficial to take it into account in order to maximize the impact of the proposal.
Pedro Príncipe (@pedroprincipe) gave a detailed explanation of OpenAIRE repository, including an Open Science approach and a short explanation of how research outcomes could be deposited, updated, shared and promoted. OpenAIRE is the European Open Access infrastructure that helps in opening up Science for the benefit of society, innovation and industry.
The second part of the seminar was focused on the importance of Research Data Management Plan – DMP as a tool for PhD students, research groups, librarians and universities to define where, when, in which formats, for how long… their research outcomes (data) will be available in an open science environment. Some guided tools for preparing a DMP were explored and the speakers highlighted the importance of those DMP have lately acquired for funding agencies.
