Alliances

GEOTEC UJI has a long-standing tradition in establishing collaborations and partnerships with various institutions, organisations and peers. Throughout the years, we built an extensive network of colleagues and experts through participation in international and national research projects, associations and alliances with private companies, public administrations and non-profit organizations. Our international spirit is evidenced by numerous co-editorships and co-authored publications, resulting in more than 200 collaborating institutions and individuals around the world.

Associations and Networks

GEOTEC members served many years on the management board of the AESIG (Spanish GIS Association), and represented Spain in numerous meetings and workshops of the Global Spatial Data Infrastructures (GSDI) association.

We are a founding member of AGILE (Association of Geographic Information laboratories in Europe), and still have an active role in the AGILE Council and in the annual AGILE conferences (conference organisers in 2014; regular workshops organisers).

Recently, with the aim of contributing to regional development in the Valencian Community and being in touch with other regions across Europe, we joined Nereus The network of European regions using space technologies.

Also in 2018, we became a new member of the Copernicus Academy, and our expected contribution to this Copernicus initiative is detailed here.

In 2019 GEOTEC also takes part in the network IDEais: Intelligent agents for SDI, funded by the Latinoamerican CYTED programmeThis network aims at creating an Ibero-American collaborative environment that develops a system of intelligent assistants to facilitate access to the Spatial Data Infrastructures. The network joins 50 institutions, universities and companies from Iberoamerica,

Standards and normalization

Through its co-director, Prof. Dr. Michael Gould, GEOTEC was former member of the Spanish Association of Standards (AENOR) national technical committee 148 on spatial data standards (representatives of ISO/TC211 and CEN/TC287). Michael also served as leader of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) documentation committee 2000-2001 and worked in OGC offices in Wayland, Massachusetts, contributed to Working Groups within the Spain SDI (IDEE) project, and served on the EU INSPIRE Metadata implementation rules drafting committee 2006-2007. He was also nominated by Spain to serve as national expert on the INSPIRE Architecture and Standards working group.

Joaquín Torres-Sospedra is currently chairing the IPIN-ISC which is committed to develop and promote open standards for indoor positioning and indoor navigation through collaboration of academia, industry and government organizations around the globe.

Companies & Institutions

GEOTEC’s cannot be understood without its collaboration with companies. The group has experience in participating in funded projects back-to-back with companies, at regional, national of international level, such as IDOM. For a long time GEOTEC kept a close collaboration with ESRI, which has been lately strengthened, with Michael’s Gould appointment as Global Education Manager working mostly in Europe, Middle East and Africa

We are also used to participate in calls for tenders. In order to provide commercial-grade software development, project management, delivery and support to organizations around the world, in late 2013 GEOTEC launched its spin-off UBIK Geospatial Solutions

When it comes to institutions, some international collaborations are particularly relevant, such as Joint Research Centre (JRC) European Commission, the European Observation Network for Territorial Development and Cohesion (ESPON) and some United Nations’ agencies, such as: WFP, WMO, UNOPS, UNSDI or UNGIWG, being the Spanish Coordination Office of the United Nations Spatial Data Infrastructure (UNSDI), promoted by UNGIWG. At Regional level GEOTEC has a membership in the governing council of the Valencian Cartographic Institute (ICV)
