Geographic information: need to know – towards a more demand-driven geospatial workforce education/training systems

Short Description

The GI N2K project will analyze the current market demands with regard to the knowledge and skills and compare them with the current training offer in the GI S&T sector. The existing GI S&T Body of Knowledge (BoK) will be used as a starting point, updated and brought in line with new technological developments, and with the European perspective in mind.

GEOTEC’s contribution

Next to a variety of smaller tasks, GEOTEC has two main responsibilities within the GIN2K project. First, as thematic experts, GEOTEC is leading the transformation of one of the nine knowledge area in the Book of Knowledge (BoK), bringing it up to date to the current state-of-the-art. Second, UJI is providing tool support on top of the updated BoK. In particular, a curriculum design tool is developed. It is conceived as a web-based application that allows educators to define a curriculum in terms of concepts present in the Body of Knowledge. The user is presented with a graphical and textual visualization of the BoK, and a graph-based editor to create a curriculum. While doing so, the user can relate curriculum elements (e.g., study programs, courses, exercise sessions) with BoK concept using a drag-and-drop interface. User can start a curriculum from scratch, or re-use an existing curriculum in the geo-spatial field, possibly from another university. Therefore, they can search and browse curricula. Finally, the user can compare curricula. For this project UJI was also seconded by AGILE (Association for Geographic Laboratories in Europe) for performing the tasks related to WP2 BoK revision.
