@geotecUJI researcher visits University of Tartu
Between Marc 12th-16th 2023, GEOTEC researcher Carlos Granell visited the Landscape Geoinformatics Lab, at the University of Tartu, Estonia, to teach a course on reproducible research practices to the students of the Erasmus+ MSc in geo-information science and earth observation for environmental modelling and management (GEM).
The course was scheduled in two sessions. On Monday (12 March 2023), the content was focused on introducing the terms reproducibility and replicability and their importance in the scientific method. Then, it was explained how these terms fit into the overall vision of Open Science and in the context of conducting a Master thesis project. On Tuesday (14 March 2023), the course touched practical aspects on how to get started with reproducibility, focusing the talk on a series of practical recommendations for writing a research output (paper, thesis, etc.) in an open and reproducible manner.
On Wednesday (15 March 2023), Carlos gave a talk to the members of the Department of Geography of the University of Tartu. In the first part of the talk, I briefly described some ongoing research projects in which the Universitat Jaume I is involved. In the second part, I put emphasis on one project which linked location-based analysis and spatial analysis techniques to the monitoring and intervention of mental health disorders.
In overall, the visit was fruitful both on teaching practices and in establishing strong collaboration with researchers at University of Tartu, Evelyn Uuemaa and Alex Kmoch . For the former, ideas to better improve teaching practices for students of the Erasmus+ MSc GEM in Tartu and students of the Erasmus+ MSc GeoTech at UJI were discussed. For the latter, ideas for future joint project proposals in terms of a joint PhD proposal were seriously discussed and preparation actions to achieve a proposal were planned.
Many thanks to Evelyn, Alex and colleagues at Tartu for having me there!
