The report summarizes the presentations, discussions, and conclusions of the Citizen Science and Smart Cities Summit organised by the European Commission Joint Research Centre on 5-7th February 2014. In the context of the Summit, the label Citizen Science was used to include both citizen science projects, and others that are about user-generated content, not necessarily addressing a scientific process or issues. The latter was the case of the ESPON CityBench project, presented by GEOTEC director Joaquín Huerta, which allows user to compare European cities and regions across multiple dimensions and indicator that come from diverse sources. A follow-up paper “CityBench: A Geospatial Exploration of Comparable Cities” that contains further technical details was recently presented at the AGILE 2014 conference.

On the Smart Cities side, GEOTEC was also an active participant in the Summit through the UJI Smart Campus, which is an ESRI-based platform for university service management developed as a “smart city tested” to support learning and rapid prototyping of apps. Indeed, AGILE 2014 participants were the first users to test and experience two new apps – AGILE 2014 and AGILE AR – that exploit the data sets and capabilities of the UJI Smart Campus.
