Is GIS Indoor the future?
It is very hard to anticipate future GIS trends in the coming year ahead. There are many! I recently heard an interview to Prof. Michael Goodchild in the context of the University of Minnesota MOOC’s on Spatial computing, and he pointed out GIS Indoor as one of the future trends in the GIS landscape. What actually drawn my attention was a single piece of data: On average, a person spends 17% out of his life outdoor and 83% indoor. This is a fundamental fact. GIS research has been extensively focused on outdoor activities over the past years. GIS indoor research is still quite unexplored today but the possibilities to bring individual, contextual, customizable GIS tools to users in indoor buildings seem to be quite appealing. Where or not GIS indoor will be a research trend in the coming years remains to be seen, but GEOTEC is already pushing hard in this direction today
