Funding institution: Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT–MICCIN) through Action Line 2: Education and Scientific Vocations
Duration: September 2024 – August 2027
Sucre4STEM, within the Sucre programme (Sense yoUr Context and REact), aims to foster computational thinking and programming skills as a practical way to solve real-world problems, while encouraging scientific curiosity and STEM vocations among pre-university students. The programme promotes inclusive, hands-on learning through project-based activities that combine coding with sensors and actuators to explore and react to the surrounding environment.
The approach is built on three basic pillars:
– SucreKit and a maker-oriented learning experience. The programme is structured around a portable kit (SucreKit) with sensors and actuators connected to a microcontroller (SucreCore), enabling students to measure and act on their context through engaging classroom experiments and challenges.
– SucreCode: block-based programming and project-based learning. Sucre4STEM provides a web-based block programming environment (SucreCode), suitable for computers and tablets, where students learn core computational thinking skills (logic, abstraction, decomposition, creativity, evaluation and generalisation) through guided projects aligned with the scientific method.
– Educational deployment, community and accessibility. The project combines different educational formats (short sessions, workshops, intensive programmes, cross-curricular integration and teacher training) supported by a web portal and reusable learning resources. It also incorporates technological and content improvements to enhance accessibility and broaden adoption in diverse educational contexts.
