abstract = {Communication between client and server is a key factor in the modern age. Nowadays, telecommunications are at the base of every system and Software that is available. The way Software communicates can determine the efficacy of it. In the GIS world, a server is often used for offloading expensive tasks such as geospatial operations or statistical analysis. This technique improves the performance of the Software systems and makes them able to scale based on the demand on real time. For making the communication between client and server more efficient, interoperable and standard, the OGC released the standard WPS. WPS defines abstract operations that are able to describe a client server communication for remote process executions. This thesis focuses on the asynchronous execution feature introduced in the version 2.0 of WPS. The main goal is to study how asynchronous process execution can benefit a client both in performance and availability. The result are promising and it is demonstrated that WPS is a solid standard for describing web services operations. Based on the obtained results, future studies can extend the standard in order to make it more general and suitable for more situations.},

abstract = {The adoption of geoprocessing service clients in mobile devices seems to be still rare, even when the communication protocol provided by the Web Processing Service (WPS) seems to fit the philosophy of accessing computation-intensive processes from resourceconstrained devices such as mobile phones. One of the reasons to such a low use of WPS services is that input and output data used in geospatial processes are often encoded in some XML-based format, which demands large processing capabilities for mobile devices. In order to deal with this problem we present the WPS Mobile Framework. This framework provides light-weight libraries to communicate with WPS servers and it carries out automatic generation of XML data binding code for mobile devices tailored to specific application needs.},

abstract = {The Model Web has been proposed as a concept for integrating scientific models in an interoperable and collaborative manner. However, four years after the initial idea was formulated, there is still no stable long term solution. Multiple authors propose Web Service based approaches to model publication and chaining, but current implementations are highly case specific and lack flexibility. This paper discusses the Web Service interfaces, which are required for supporting integrated environmental modeling in a sustainable manner. We explore ways to expose environmental models and their components using Web Service interfaces. Our discussions present work in progress for establishing the Web Services technological grounds for simplifying information publication and exchange within the Model Web. As a main outcome, this contribution identifies challenges in respect to the required geo- processing and relates them to currently available Web Service standards.},
