abstract = {The lack of a well-established and unified place theory across disciplines is decelerating its formalization, evolution, and especially its pragmatic implications and applicability. In this article, we identify research gaps in the emotive facets of place scholarship. We found that it: (1) rarely joins physical, social, and individual variables in the same model; (2) omits the immediately perceived and sensory dimensions; (3) disregards the analysis of how individual–place emotive relationships vary across time; and (4) overlooks the difficulties of reducing multifaceted emotive facets of place into geographic features. Next, we examine these research gaps through the lens of technology-based advancements in urban analytics. Finally, we discuss the need to combine social-oriented research and (spatial) data-driven disciplines to enrich and expand the research area of emotive facets of place and connected disciplines.},

abstract = {Urban environments constitute the habitats in which an increasing number of people live. Place-making forms part of this living, occurring in the context of specific urban assemblages made up of facilities that serve different purposes. For example, Soho in London is characterized by entertainment facilities, while large parts of the Ruhr area in Germany are dominated by industrial features. In this article, we explore possible links between exposure to certain urban facilities and sense of place in Lisbon, Portugal. To do so, we use a web mapping-based survey that allows respondents to map and rate meaningful areas. These areas and their assessments are related to points of interest extracted from Google Places in a structural equation model using PLS-SEM. The results show that exposure to everyday urban facilities such as grocery shops is negatively correlated with place identity, while those that represent leisure locations are negatively correlated with place attachment. Both findings suggest that the temporal rhythm of exposure to certain features is an important factor. Methodologically, our study shows that scales differ between place concepts and their associated spatial footprints – an important finding for future studies. We end the article by offering conclusions and policy recommendations.},

abstract = {When immigrants move to a new city, they tend to develop distinct relationships with the urban landscape, which in turn becomes the new setting of their routine-based activities that evolve over time. Previous works in environmental psychology have quantitatively examined non-native residents' development of sense of place towards their new environment. In this paper, we introduce the spatial perspective into studying the sense of place experienced by non-natives in an urban context. We study the person-place bonds, relationships, and feelings cultivated by non-native residents living in the city of Lisbon (Portugal) through an online map-based survey. Then, we carried out spatial analysis aimed at distinguishing and visualizing the different facets of sense of place developed by two participant groups: short-term residents and long-term residents. Results showed that while short-term residents reported bonds with places, long-term residents' senses of place were more intense and broader throughout the city. The correlations, associations, and relationships between participant groups and the dimensions of sense of place allowed us to observe features and patterns that were previously described in the literature, although adding the spatial lenses can potentially provide better insights for urban planning, community development, and inclusive policies.},

abstract = {Place is a part of the geographic space which people have imbued with symbols and connotations unfolded through psychological mechanisms. Places carry meanings for individuals, communities or even nations evidenced by bonds referred collectively as sense of place. Dissecting sense of place can aid planners in providing a social-psychological layer of the world characterized by the distinct relationships people possess towards the physical settings. In this research, different dimensions of sense of place experienced by foreign residents in the city of Lisbon were investigated through a map-based survey and following spatial analysis.
First, the map-based survey was structured on sense of place dimensions drawn from the environmental psychology and human geography research. The dimensions examined here were: (i) place dependence – functional attachment; (ii) place awareness – familiarity and exploration; (iii) place identity – special bonds and self-identity (iv) place inherited – rootedness and belongingness. The survey was shared online among international residents of the city and hand-drawn polygons were processed in order to represent the spatial lay-outs of sense of place. Subsequently, answers were split into two participant categories: short-terms and long-terms. Overlay analysis, spatial comparison metrics, cluster evaluation, statistics and the confection of map products were carried out in order to compare and visualize the distinct sense of place components.
Results, discussion and interpretation were brought forward through comparing dimensions between participant groups; between dimensions themselves, as well as identifying meaningful places within the urban landscape. The spatial imprint of sense of place in the specified context of study provided insights regarding the distinction between groups. Long-term and short-term dwellers’ geographic dimensions of sense of place were found to have different patterns, properties and characteristics. Lastly, similar to other works within the same scope, this research asserts the potential of using GIS in providing new perspectives and methodologies from which humanities research can greatly benefit.},
